FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Legality
Ownership is generally legal in the United States without requiring any sort of background check.
Like our flagship LRT, the Compact is simply a long range torch. However, Maryland and California do have restrictions regarding such devices. The city of Warren, Michigan also prohibits possession via local ordinance.
In Maryland, these systems appear to be outright prohibited to possess due to falling under the state's definition of a destructive device.
In California, non-stationary devices that are designed/intended to emit a burning stream at least 10 feet are prohibited without a license issued by the State Fire Marshal. We are working on a version that reduces the output distance to less than 10 feet to create a compliant version that does not require a permit/authorization.
Check with your local laws. It is your responsibility to understand and adhere to all relevant regulations.
Safety
The Pulsefire Compact torch system is a liquid fuel flame stream system that is built to be as safe as possible for a device of its nature. Our team developed every aspect with user safety in mind. For example:
- The nozzle design helps keep fuel and flames at the nozzle instead of dripping back toward the user.
- The fuel hose is looped twice to ensure liquid fuel is always present inside the plumbing, as a redundant prevention of flashback.
- The ignition system is on-demand; no need for an open flame pilot torch or pressurized butane.
- The fuel storage tank is non-pressurized, like any typical gasoline powered outdoor tool.
- A normally-closed solenoid valve between the pump and nozzle prevents fuel flow when the system is off.
- A low voltage cutoff circuit prevents over-discharging the battery used to power the unit.
- Two opposing direction switches are required to be simultaneously pressed to activate the system.
Of course, flame producing equipment is inherently hazardous. Good judgment is key to maintaining personal safety. When the battery pack is installed, pressing the trigger switches will generate fuel and flames up to 25 feet away.
No. There is not enough air inside the plumbing to facilitate a flame front that is in any way harmful. The tiny nozzle orifice, convoluted geometry solenoid valve, and twice-looped fuel hose provide flame arresting properties.
Operation
Fully charged, it should power the system for about 15 full tanks of fuel.
The system will cut power when it's time to charge the battery, which is as simple as connecting a USB-C cable.
No, the output is always at full power, and the nozzle size is fixed. An optional nozzle will be available and preinstalled for California based customers to limit the reach to below 10 feet to comply with local regulations, so one could reduce the distance if they so desired.
No. The Compact is our entry model designed to be as small, lightweight, and convenient as possible. Its pump and ignition system are not designed for such extended use.
Either:
- At max fill with the vent screw closed
- Completely empty with the vent screw slightly open
Temperature fluctuations can result in contraction of the fuel tank. If using in a warm environment and then storing in a cooler environment, leave the vent screw open for a short period of time until the system has time to acclimate to avoid the vapors condensing and causing suction/vacuum and crushing the fuel tank inward.
If stored in a cold environment and then exposed to a warmer one, the tank may be expanded, and opening the vent screw may be required before removing the cap is possible. Operating the unit will also reduce internal pressure prior to opening the vent screw, if necessary.
Fuel
Gasoline (unleaded, any octane, E0 - E85) produces a bright hot flashy flame and produces the most reliable and brilliant results. The ignition system is smaller on the Compact and mixtures including those with diesel have not been confirmed reliable.
Higher octane will not make a difference. Octane rating is about how resistant a fuel is to pre-ignition when under high compression inside an engine. If the octane rating is too low, it's possible for the fuel to combust before it should and lead to engine damage. This has nothing to do whatsoever with the function or performance of a device that ignites fuel in open air.

Great product. I had an issue getting it to work, it was my own fault♂️. These guys walked me through everything and got me going with no delay. They provided the fastest service I have ever seen. 10/10 recommend for product and service.

I like the small size but it doesn’t light well. It also burns through the fuel extremely fast. A couple of plastic pieces rattled around when I first got it. I called support and left a message. No call back.

Electrodes might be misaligned (too high) seems to be something we’re noticing on this batch. Just bend them lower. Should be centered across the nozzle opening (close one eye as you confirm to avoid parallax). What temperature was it outside? Looks to be pretty cold lately in your area. Less vapor -> less material to ignite. Electrode alignment becomes more critical in extreme conditions. We are working with our injection molding supplier to address the plastic pieces in the future, as it’s embarrassing that some of the ribs/supports inside may break during transport, but rest assured – the product will function normally, and the external surface is unaffected. We hate to see it, but it’s kind of a quirk on the Compact and won’t affect function. Shake ’em out and send it. You called us and say we didn’t call back but before you could even leave your voicemail, my recorded voice said: “We’re currently exhibiting at the Great American Outdoor Show and will return on Feb 18. Email us at [email protected] for the fastest response as we have our computers with us, but not our phone system. You can also leave a voicemail if you can’t email us, but it will take us longer to follow up with.” Since you left a voicemail, it takes longer for us to follow up with, just like I had stated. As far as burning through the fuel fast, it does exactly what it says it does. 18 seconds full to empty. Our larger models are made for the big jobs, this is just to get a simple fire going, and priced accordingly. It’s our entry model. We seem to have to repeat this endlessly, unfortunately. It’s not going to be an absolute beast, it’s designed to serve a purpose. To be small, light, and send a 15+ foot stream of ignited fuel, and it does that. -Chris

I purchased a pulsefire compact and sadly it came without batteries so I contacted them to fix the issue and with very little issue and while they were at an outdoor show in Pa. They got back to me in a reasonable time and sent me the batteries without any issues

We were all hands on deck preparing and shipping our first batch of Compacts! Sometimes something slips through like that with friends and family helping. 🙂 We’re always here to make it right though.

Insanely underwhelming. I know I got the compact model but this should have made me excited to buy the bigger ones! It did not. It has less power than a squirt gun and it drizzles down to about a 4 foot stream almost immediately. Felt like I had ED when I tried it out for the first time. The design was nice but the handle felt flimsy and the matching seam flexed quite a bit. I wanted to love this so much!

Yours has an issue. You can see our videos, photos, etc.; it goes nearly 20 feet and we advertise 15+ to under-promise and over-deliver. It’s not a 4 foot model. We have a warranty; we stand behind our products. We don’t make garbage. We’d appreciate if you contacted us first if you experienced any problems so we could determine the root cause and improve the product if an issue with a component exists. When you open the box, the bright orange notice to the right says: GIVE US THE OPPORTUNITY AND WE WILL MAKE IT RIGHT.
